Access databases rebuilt on SQL Server
A client ran crucial parts of its business on Microsoft Access databases that Datawise had not written. We analysed them, migrated them to SQL Server and improved them along the way.
The work at a glance
- Migrated Access databases covering several crucial parts of the business, moved to SQL Server
- Enhanced Features improved during the migration, followed by enhanced reports and new streamlined features
- Integrated A cloud-based service that processes data and returns the results to the database for storage, production use and reporting
The starting point
The client’s Access databases were varied in function, complex, and covered crucial parts of the business.
Datawise had not written the original applications, so the project called for analysis and design as well as data migration and troubleshooting. Once the databases were on SQL Server, enhanced reports, new streamlined features and integration with external systems followed.
If your organisation relies on Access
Access suits a small database used by a handful of people. Difficulties tend to appear as more of the organisation comes to depend on it:
- Files that lock when several people work at once
- Slow performance
- A system that only one member of staff understands
A migration starts by establishing exactly what the databases do. Their business rules are often held in forms and queries rather than written down, and skipping that analysis carries the same problems into the new system.
